Floating Point Studios is an independent games development company in Swansea (Wales) in the UK. The studio aims to development new Intellectual Property and new and innovative games and gameplay styles, for the first three years of the studio's life the team will be developing games specifically to develop the studio's toolset, this process has been code named Beta-Dev and more information regarding the Beta-Dev process will be released soon

The studio also aims to have a very strong community interaction and will be publishing development diaries, team member blogs and development comics weekly. Floating Point Studios also aims for the community to talk back to them and will listen and reply to any comments and positive and/or negative comments regarding FPS' games and studio.

FPS was founded in 2008 by Julian Hainsworth a graduate from the skillset accredited Swansea Metropolitan University (SMU). The studio was incorporated as a private limited liability company on the 17th July 2008. The studio plans to and already does employ both students and graduates from both the Swansea universities and qualified person's from further afield too and the studio looks forward to creating more creative jobs in Swansea.

The name Floating Point Studios comes from two places, the first of which is the floating point variable. The floating point variable can be to a decimal place allowing it to achieve a high dynamic range, where as the integer variable can only be a whole number and therefore by nature integers are very linear. Naming the studio Floating Point is to connote that FPS is a non-linear, multifaceted, dynamic team. The other reason is a joke at the games industry's expense as the abbreviation for Floating Point Studios is FPS and in the gaming universe FPS is an abbreviation for the genre of First Person Shooter.

FPS will be developing downloadable games for the PC at the start of the studio's life and this will continue unquestionably until 2010 and most likely beyond, however during 2009 FPS is going to apply for development status for one current/next generation console and from then onwards FPS will develop downloadable titles for this console as well. The console that FPS wishes to develop on has already been decided but it will not be announced until FPS has achieved developer status on the console.
